GEOCENTRIC CHART     heliOCENTRIC CHART

Article: What are Aspects in a Chart?

Planets move at different speeds and change zodiac signs. Aspects are the degree of separation currently between two or more planets at a given time. So, aspects come and go and since these are mathmatical equations, we always know where they’ve been, where they are today, and where they’re headed. Understanding what the Planets and their Aspects mean is how we translate potential current cosmic conditions. If you look on any astrology chart wheel the Aspects are the lines that run across the inner circle of a chart wheel connecting and separating Planets and Signs. Think of it as “family dynamics”. Folks are seated round a big table sharing conversation. Some of the guests have nothing much to say one way or another so things can do either way. Others seem to share a harmonious dialogue and exchange. While other combinations of seated guests are sure to dish out challenge and obstacles.

000 degrees = Conjunct = Powerful 060 degrees = Sextile = Opportunity 090 degrees = Square = Blockage 120 degrees = Trine = Talent 180 degrees = Opposites = Attracts and/or Repels
Hold your mouse over each aspect diagram to read the explanations.

Aspects are shown as the lines that run through the middle of the chart wheel. They describe the relationships (what’s currently going on) between planets and signs. Aspects also give us a second layer of insight so look at the planet, zodiac sign and mode (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable) they’re in. For example, there can be Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable squares, etc. Or a Cardinal - Fixed square, etc.

conjunctionConjunct = planets at 00 degree same sign = extra potent opportunity or challenge (allow 10 degree orb) but it also depends on the planet and sign involved.

sextileSextiles = planets at 60 degree angle = opportunity knocks but you need to discern whether this is a good one or not for you (allow 06 degree orb) and while a sextile is considered to be favorable, it also depends on the planet and sign involved. When opportunity knocks, there are doors, locks, and keys.

squareSquares = planets at 90 degree angle = challenges or obstacles that require a workaround or solution and action for balance concerning emotional or mental issues (allow 08 degree orb). Some signs love the challenge of overcoming a square as it makes them feel alive.

trineTrines = planets at 120 degree angle = usually a harmonious time for displaying or showing off your talent so it is considered beneficial, but for whom? And hopefully the talent is a positive expression (allow 08 degree orb) but it also depends on the planet and sign involved.

oppositionOpposes = planets at 180 degrees angle = see saw type ups and downs swings which can be physical confrontations and battles - mental - emotional matters (allow 10 degree orb). Opposites attract but they can also repel. Balance and compromise is required.

< Inconjuncts = planets at 150 degrees = challenges or obstacles that require a balance concerning emotional or physical matters (allow 02 degree orb). You have to make adjustments in life.

Heliocentric versus Geocentric

Whether you use Geocentric or Heliocentric calculation methods, the Aspects, Planets and Zodiac Signs and Degrees mean the same thing.

The big difference is that from the Helio Sun-centered perspective, planets do not Retrograde, both the Cancer and Leo are ruled by Earth so you don’t see the Sun and Moon on a Helio chart, nor are Lunar Nodes, the MC and IC, or Houses used. The Geo is an Earth-centered perspective and includes all of the above.
